José A. De Gracia

José is a historian of modern Latin America with a special interest in anti-imperialism and human rights in the Global South. José’s current research centers on the struggle of Panamanian tenants for affordable housing in the twentieth century, and how their activism led not only to the emergence of a global human rights regime but also to forging stronger ties between Latin America and the Third World during the Cold War. José was the recipient of the Latin American Social and Public Policy Fellowship (2023-24) from the Center for Latin American Studies and the World History Center Graduate Fellow from 2025-2026.
